logoofhbsToday on Rosh Hashana our Badge of the Week comes from the club known as Hapoel Be’er Sheva F.C.. The club was formed in 1949 in the city of Be’er Sheva, the largest city in the Negev desert in Israel. Their first ever game was played in the Old City of Be’er Sheva, a 5-4 victory over a team from Mefalsim, a Kibbutz in Southern Israel. Competing in the Israeli Premier League, last season Hapoel Be’er Sheva F.C. won the title for the third time in their history, and the first time in thirty years. They are currently enjoying a good start to their 2016/17 UEFA Europa League campaign, following up an impressive 2-0 win over Inter Milan at the San Siro with a 0-0 draw with Southampton last Thursday to keep them top of Group K.

In 2016 a slightly modified version of the Hapoel Be’er Sheva club crest was introduced, which we can see here. The lower half of the badge is simply a football, and the top half contains a chimney which symbolizes the city’s municipal building, while the name the club written in English and Hebrew around the top edges. On the top left a boxer can also be seen with a hammer and sickle surrounding him, while the round star above the badge represents the titles the club has won in its past. Former players for Hapoel Be’er Sheva include ex-Premier League star Yossi Benayoun, who began his career there before playing in midfield for West Ham, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Queen’s Park Rangers.
