As an Easter Monday special, our Badge of the Week this week comes from Northern Ireland with the rabbit-themed Warrenpoint Town Football Club.
Warrenpoint is a small town located in County Down, situated on the northern shores of Carlingford Lough. According to local folklore, the area was a rabbit warren – and a pair of angular rabbits are featured on the crest of Warrenpoint Town Football Club, and also how Warrenpoint got its name.
The club from Milltown competes in the NIFL Premiership and at the tail-end of 2020 recorded their first-ever league victory over Linfield, a big achievement for the relative new-comers to the top-level of the pyramid.
Rabbit mascots are easy to find, from Scunthorpe United FC’s Scunny Bunny to Peterborough’s cleverly (?) named rabbit Peter Burrow, and further afield to Brazil with América Futebol Clube and FC Edmonton in Canada whose young mascot left a footprint on their crest. It’s much harder to find rabbits leave more than a footprint on the club crest, but there are notable mentions for Bangkok Glass and Joinville Sporting Club (alongside Warrenpoint Town FC of course).
