Okinawa is the largest of the Ryukyu Islands, a collection of islands south of mainland Japan. Before Japan annexed the Ryukyu Islands in 1879, the lands had been ruled by the Ryukyu Kingdom for over four hundred years.
History and geography lessons aside, the badge of FC Ryukyu displays the crowns of the kings of the former Ryukyu Kingdom. It also showcases a pair of Shisas – imaginary talismanic creatures in Okinawan mythology deriving from Chinese guardian lions, resembling a cross between a lion and a dog.
The team currently play in the J2 League, the second level of the Japanese association football league system.
