Germany underwhelmed against Poland

The Germany and Poland game had so much promise for an entertaining watch. It may have failed to live up to that expectation (not a single attempt on target in the first half), but it provided both sides with a valuable point and a huge step towards the last 16.

In an evening of few chances, Germany managed to test Fabianski, in for the injured Szczesny, a couple of times through Ozil and Gotze, but they never really looked like breaking the deadlock. The best chance of the evening fell to Arkadiusz Milik who should have scored with his head from four yards out.

Despite the boring nature of the game, it leaves Germany and Poland on 4 points, with Northern Ireland closely trailing behind on 3, following their impressive win against Ukraine. One thing that was settled by this result was Ukraine’s elimination.

How I will watch it

I’ll be rushing home from work as I am very keen to watch this game. My usual home time is around 5.30, meaning most of the first half might have to be listened to on my phone whilst commuting. I’ll definitely catch the second half on TV.

I am trying really hard to get behind my sweepstake team but it is going to be difficult not to want Northern Ireland to win to be honest. It would be an amazing story if they could overcome the odds and it would be great to see the fans having their moment. They have been top class support so far this tournament and it would be a shame for them to crash out.

Prediction: Northern Ireland 1 – 0 Germany

I’m going to against the grain and follow my heart. It seems unlikely and I’m not going to back this score line with any kind of bet, but it would just be an amazing see.

Mario Gomez will likely start up front for Germany

Germany have been sub-par so far this tournament, I would expect them to line up slightly differently tonight. Gotze in the false nine role has just not worked at all so far. Germany look without an attacking outlet in this system. I fully expect to see Mario Gomez thrown in to the mix to give them a focal point and something to aim at.

Something within me tells me that Northern Ireland will frustrate Germany for 80 plus minutes, que Will Grigg to come on, terrify the German defence, score a late winner and start a chant from the Northern Ireland supporters. Ukraine managing a draw with Poland to spare the German blushes.

Final group standings:

  1. Northern Ireland
  2. Poland
  3. Germany
  4. Ukraine

Northern Ireland claimed a historic victory over Ukraine last time out

What a win! I truly believed that my beloved Northern Ireland would come out fighting and that’s exactly what happened. Whereas against Poland the players approached the game like lambs to the slaughter, this time round the players were more like pack of hungry Northern Irish wolves biting into tackles and hunting down every ball. When the second goal went in I have to say I did jump up and celebrate like it was England who scored, which did result in some confused glances from my neighbour’s garden. The 2-0 win was a fantastic achievement and does give Northern Ireland a glimmer of hope for progression into the knockout stage.

How I will watch it

This game will mostly be followed in the slightly awkward location of the gym. The first half will be watched amongst the regular swarm of beefcakes in the weights area, and then the second half in my more natural gym habitat of the treadmill.

Prediction: Northern Ireland 1 – 1 Germany

I am sure that the players will have learnt from the previous two matches that the best way to approach a game against a side like Germany is on the front foot. I haven’t been that impressed by Germany so far, they’re the youngest side at the Euros and I think that they have the potential to become very unsettled if you keep on their toes. Germany are huge favourites, but I’m going to back Northern Ireland to ruffle a few German feathers and grind out another famous result.

Final group standings:

  1. Germany
  2. Poland
  3. Northern Ireland
  4. Ukraine

Poland have been excellent been so far

As results go, 0-0 against Germany is certainly a good one! Much better than the 2-1 loss I was expecting anyway (Sorry, Poland!). My second sweepstake team are still definitely in it to win it, as they say. If Poland beat Ukraine in their next match, and Northern Ireland manage to hold Germany off, Poland could actually top their group! Not the most likely turn of events, but possible nonetheless. As Leicester city taught me, stranger things have happened.

How I will watch it

I’m in Normandy, France at the moment, ahead of going to watch Iceland vs Austria live on Wednesday! I’ll be looking for a bar in Gournay-en-Bray, the nearby town to where I’m staying before heading to Paris.

Prediction: Ukraine 1 – 2 Poland

lew

Will Lewandowski finally score?

This game signifies another neighbourly rivalry. I enjoy a good grudge match – football needs a bit of drama to keep it interesting. Ukraine will be feeling the sting after losing to Northern Ireland, but ultimately Poland should prove too strong for them. Perhaps Lewandowski will actually score a goal, considering I’ve been bigging him up for the last two weeks. Perhaps he will score two! But I won’t be putting money on it.

Final group standings:

  1. Germany
  2. Poland
  3. Northern Ireland

Last time out

Ukraine produced perhaps the most disappointing display of the tournament against Northern Ireland last time out. Gareth McAuley headed in a fantastic free kick from Oliver Norwood and Naill McGinn prodded in late on to secure the green and white army all three points. As a result Ukraine were the first team officially knocked out of the competition and ruined my chances of claiming that sweepstake prize.

How I will watch it

Ukraine

Ukraine have had a very disappointing tournament

With Ukraine having no chance of progressing there is little incentive for me to follow this one, so I may well end up tuning into Northern Ireland vs. Germany instead. The team itself does not seem particularly up for it either with coach Mykhailo Fomenko (who will quit his managerial duties after the tournament) admitting it will be ‘a tough task to lift the team for our final group match’.

The only small positive from the final group is that some decent young players like Oleksandr Zinchenko might get a run out.

Prediction: Poland 2-1 Ukraine

Given how impressive Poland have looked and how underwhelming Ukraine have been, I expect a victory for the Poles. Although it’s worth noting Poland have not beaten their neighbours to the East for 16 years so this might be more competitive than we think.

Final group standings:

  1. Poland
  2. Germany
  3. Northern Ireland
  4. Ukraine
