tromso_il_logo-svgHappy 2017 from Box to Box Football! Coming in at the top of our calendar year is the northernmost top-level football club in the world: Tromsø IL. Competing in the Tippeligaen in Norway, the club formed in 1920 and first became known as Tromsø Idrettslag (IL for short) ten years later, having acquitted themselves well with a first district championship win in 1927.

The team play in Tromsø, considered to be the northernmost city in the world. So what must it be like to play football at effectively the top of the world? Pretty cold at times, I’d imagine, but with the considerable perk of witnessing incredible auroras in the night sky. Tromsø is in the middle of the aurora borealis zone, and is one of the best places in the world to observe the northern lights.

Next week we will look at almost the polar opposite: a club nearly 10,000 miles away, sitting at the end of the world…
