Sometimes an effective badge is a simple badge. Going against the detailed Australian effort last week, or even the Philadelphia Union effort that we looked at back in April, this crest from the USA goes with the, “what you see is what you get” approach. Think of the Shell sign you see at petrol stations and you’re on the right lines – the Portland Timbers are called this firstly because they come from Portland, Oregon. Makes sense. The Timbers part, and the axe on the badge, references the Pacific Northwest’s logging industry. Loggers tend to use axes. Easy. Simple. Sorted.
The club were founded in 2009 and play in the Western Conference of the Major League Soccer (MLS), winning the MLS Cup in 2015 by beating Columbus Crew SC 2-1 in the final. One of their prominent current players is former Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell… Remember him? Portland Timbers even have a reserve team that compete in the lower leagues in the States. But while European teams tend to go with ‘Barcelona B’ or something to that effect, Portland have opted for more of an action movie sequel approach, as the team are named Portland Timbers 2, or often referred to simply as ‘T2’.
