Based in the town of Kapan, in the Syunik Province of Armenia, comes FC Gandzasar Kapan. Translated from Armenian, ‘Gandz-a-sar’ simply means ‘Treasure Mountain’, and the football team of the area are known as ‘The Bears’. These two details go some way to explaining the bear climbing a footballing mountain of sorts on the club badge – and perhaps the key is for unlocking rival defences as much as it is for treasure…

FC Gandzasar Kapan formed in 2002, achieving promotion to the Armenian Premier League just four years later. Though they have yet to win the league, they have qualified for UEFA Europa League qualifying three times in their relatively short history.
