It’s been a long time coming, but this coming weekend finally sees the return of the Premier League. We have new managers, new stadiums, new players… and even a new Premier League badge. For the first time since 1993 the EPL will have no official sponsor – we’ve had Carling, Barclaycard and Barclays, but now it will simply be known as ‘The Premier League’. After Barclays’ deal expired at the end of the 2015-16 season, the FA argued that they wanted to build a “clean” brand for the competition similar to major U.S. sports leagues. With more money in the Premier League than ever before, now seems the best time to try this – the lion of previous badges remains, but in a simplified (and purple) form. If this is to be a season of change, then this is a fairly effective aesthetic one to start with.
