Badge of the Week travels to Anchorage this week, the largest city in the U.S. state of Alaska, to look at Cook Inlet Soccer Club.
Formed in 1982, Cook Inlet Soccer Club now has over 2,500 youths aged between 2 and 19 annually taking part in soccer programs. This grassroots club has produced over 60 Alaska State Championship teams, and over 100 local tournament champions for the local Anchorage community to enjoy.
The anchor on the club badge is likely a reference to the Anchorage city flag. The name ‘Anchorage’ first surfaced when the area was being built up into a city in the early 20th century. At the mouth of Ship Creek (next to modern-day downtown Anchorage), a dry-docked steamship named ‘Bertha’ rested, and on it there was a popular hardware and clothing store named ‘The Anchorage’. The name caught on, and by 1920 was formalised for official use by the U.S. Post Office Department .
